  5. 05Data acquisition, ethical clearance and data-use agreements where required
  6. 06Preliminary exploratory analysis and feasibility demonstration
  7. 07Project planning: milestones, deliverables and risk register
  8. 08Writing chapters one to three of the project report
  9. 09The proposal defence: presenting and defending your design

How to pass DTS 417

  • Confirm you can actually obtain the data before you commit to the topic. No-data is the number one cause of a stalled project
  • Choose a supervisor whose interests match your topic and agree a fixed meeting rhythm in week one
  • Do the entire pipeline on a tiny sample early — an end-to-end rough version in month one beats a perfect chapter one and no code
  • Write as you go. Chapters one to three written in the last two weeks are visibly written in the last two weeks
