Course outline

  1. 01Implementing the methodology: data preparation, modelling and iteration
  2. 02Experimental rigour: baselines, controls, reproducible pipelines and version control
  3. 03Evaluation against the criteria set in the proposal; statistical validity of the comparison
  4. 04Interpreting results honestly, including negative and inconclusive findings
  5. 05Writing chapters four and five: results, discussion, conclusion and recommendations
  6. 06Producing publication-quality tables and figures
  7. 07Assembling the complete report to the departmental format
  8. 08Preparing the demonstration/artefact for assessment
  9. 09The final defence: presentation, demonstration and viva questions

How to pass DTS 428

  • A negative result honestly analysed scores better than a suspiciously perfect one. Examiners have seen fabricated accuracy figures before
  • Always report a baseline. "My model got 87%" means nothing without "and the trivial baseline gets 85%"
  • Rehearse the defence with a friend playing hostile examiner. Prepare specifically for "why this method and not X?" and "what are the limitations?"
  • Freeze your code and results two weeks before submission and spend that time on the report. Late changes are what break projects
