  9. 09Health data privacy, consent and the ethics of biomedical data

Recommended textbooks

  • Bioinformatics and Functional Genomics — Jonathan Pevsner

3rd ed. — the standard broad introduction

  • Biostatistics: A Foundation for Analysis in the Health Sciences — Daniel & Cross

11th ed. — the statistical half of this course

How to pass UUY-DTS 411

  • The multiple-testing problem is the defining statistical issue in genomics: with 20,000 genes tested at p < 0.05 you get 1,000 false positives by chance. Understand Bonferroni and Benjamini–Hochberg
  • Survival analysis is the one technique here that transfers everywhere — customer churn and equipment failure are the same mathematics
  • Use real public data (NCBI, WHO, NCDC) for practicals; health data science is unusually well served by open datasets
  • The ethics content is not decorative — health data carries the strictest consent and privacy obligations of any domain you will work in
